Service Description

In Katherine’s first intensive masterclass on the South Coast, you can expect to spend 5 days immersed in pottery production, learning to improve your throwing technique to create pots that are consistent, cohesive and balanced. Katherine Mahoney's masterclass on the wheel will guide you through the process of design, production and making with an emphasis on working with you individually on wheelthrowing technique. Katherine will also provide guidance on how to promote and sell your work. This class is best suited to intermediate to advanced wheelthrowers who are keen to take their work to the next level. Participants should be able to confidently centre and make cylinders from approximately 600 grams of clay. This masterclass is a practical, ‘hands on’, participatory session and will include demonstrations and artist talk by Katherine. Session dates 8 January – 12 January 2025 Session times: 9.30am - 4.30pm Participants will be using the studio recycled clay to allow for plenty of opportunity to practice. Bags of midfire clay will also be available for purchase. m,iIncluded: • 5 days of demonstrations, input, tuition and assistance from Katherine • Morning tea each day • Tea/coffee • Use of studio tools/equipment • Bisque firing of up to 30 items per person (no single piece larger than 30cm height/diameter What to bring: • Apron • Favourite throwing and turning tools (we have plenty of tools to use in the studio if you don’t bring any with you) • Towel • Notebook and pen/pencil • Water bottle • Lunch • Throwing gauge (optional) Artist bio Katherine began an apprenticeship at Cranbrook Station Pottery in 1974 before opening her own studio. Later, she moved to Hong Kong and became immersed in the rich history of Asian ceramics. She began exhibiting one-off pieces, gaining an international reputation for her work and judging exhibitions, such as the Hong Kong Biennale. While in Hong Kong she also taught pottery classes at the Museum of Art, the Polytechnic and various centres of art. Since moving to Sydney in the late nineties, Katherine has continued to make one-off, wheel-thrown pieces, alongside a range of tableware for restaurants, designers and galleries.
